Common questions
What does my phone need?
Android 8 or newer and about 250 MB of free space for the app and its speech models. The conversation model for talking with Lena offline is an optional extra download of about 2.6 GB; the app downloads it over Wi-Fi.
Lena has an English accent or no voice. How do I get a German voice?
Lena speaks through your phone's text-to-speech engine. Open the Talk tab and tap Get a German voice, then follow the steps to install the German voice data.
Do I need an account?
No. Everything works without one, on your phone. An account is only for syncing your progress between devices.
How do accounts and sync work?
Sign in with your email (we send a one-time code or link) or with Google. With sync on, your learning profile, practice history, flashcards and some settings are kept with your account so they appear on your other devices. Recordings and Talk conversations never sync; they stay on the phone. See the privacy policy for the full list.
What's online AI, and what does it cost?
Lena runs on your phone by default. If you'd like quicker replies, or don't want the 2.6 GB download, you can use Anthropic's Claude instead with your own API key: create one at console.anthropic.com and paste it in the app's Settings. Your text (never audio) goes straight from your phone to Anthropic, and Anthropic bills your account for what you use. GutenTalk doesn't charge for it and doesn't see the conversation.
Lena said something wrong or inappropriate. How do I report it?
Tap Report under the reply or correction in Talk and choose a reason. The report is anonymous and helps us fix the problem. For anything else, email us.
How do I get a copy of my data?
Use Export my data in the app's Settings.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. Without the app: delete your account here.
